When Is the Best Time to Fish in Gulf Shores?

Fishing spots are open and available for you all throughout the year in Gulf Shores; however, the best time to get out on the shore depends all on the types of fish you’re looking to catch. Springtime will see many pompano, cobias, and black drums, while the summer will likely bring red snapper and mahi-mahi. Autumn sees a change in migration patterns, bringing flounder and Spanish mackerel, while quieter beaches during the winter offer plenty of chances to catch sheepshead and whiting.

Do You Need a Fishing Permit in Gulf Shores?

Most independent fishing in Gulf Shores will require an Alabama saltwater fishing license. Annual and 7-day licenses are available; however, those under 16 are exempt. Reef fishing may also require a Gulf Reef Fish Endorsement, which costs $10 and is required for anyone wanting to take fish from the Gulf. Those looking to enjoy fishing on a guided boat charter likely won’t need to worry about licenses, as most operators hold licenses that cover the entire group.

The Best Places to Fish in Gulf Shores

From piers to shorelines and beaches, there are a variety of great places to cast a line all throughout Gulf Shores.

Gulf State Park

The Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier is one of the easiest places to start. The pier extends anglers beyond the surf without requiring a boat, opening access to several depths and fish habitats. Possible fall catches include Spanish and king mackerel, bluefish, whiting, redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. The pier is open 24 hours a day and includes covered seating, accessible rail fishing, comfort stations, and an indoor shop. Fishing and parking fees apply. Sunrise and sunset offer comfortable temperatures and low-light conditions. Book a stay at one of our Royal Palms Condos, which sit right by the pier, for a convenient fishing experience at just about any time of day.

Little Lagoon

Little Lagoon offers an alternative to the open Gulf. At Little Lagoon Pass Park, moving water around the pass can attract bait and feeding fish. The park has parking, restrooms, showers, and beach access.

Gulf Shores Public Beach

Grab a spot directly by the water for miles of open shoreline. The beachfront location makes it very convenient to walk on the shore. It's important to know that while surf fishing is allowed, it is prohibited at Gulf Place. Many visitors to the beach like to plant their rod in the sand as they wait for their catches, which can include speckled trout and whiting in this area.

Fort Morgan Fishing Pier

Fort Morgan Fishing Pier sits near the mouth of Mobile Bay, about a half-hour drive from town. Its protected water can be useful when open-beach fishing is difficult. Catches may include white trout, ground mullet, redfish, speckled trout, and flounder.

Gulf Shores Fishing Charters

While independent fishing will require a license, you can skip the hassle by booking a charter with a trusted captain! Many boat operators have years of experience on the Gulf Shore’s waters, using that knowledge to bring guests to some of the best fishing spots in the area.
